The purpose of the Grounds and Maintenance Department is to clean and maintain all of all the city buildings: Fire, Police, Community Center, City Hall and the Planning Department, and soon the new Library and City Hall.
This department is comprised of 2 ½ custodial staff, one supervisor, and several seasonal workers. Along with these people, community service workers are supervised to help maintain the different facilities that the department is responsible for.
Along with maintaining the buildings, other responsibilities involve the yards that surround some of the buildings including planting flowers and some mowing along with vegetation trimming.
Some of the projects that the department is currently working on include development of a 5,000 s.f. storage facility located at the corner of Railroad Avenue and Sharon Street. This building will provide storage for Police, Fire, Parks and Grounds & Maintenance. There will also be a fenced off area surrounding this facility and the north end of the property will someday be developed as a small pocket park. A parking lot and outside storage will also be a part of this project.
Some of the other projects that this department is working on include
interior painting at the Community Center and providing some maintenance to the exterior walls that have shown wear over the years.
This department is also responsible for the yard waste recycling center located at 951 Section Street. This facility allows residents in Burlington to bring their grass clippings, branches, and leaves during spring, summer and fall.
