Learn a Language @ Your Library

Want to brush up on your Spanish before a job interview? Hope to learn some French to impress a date? Can't wait to tackle Dutch or Norwegian so you can chat with Grandma? The Burlington Public Library and the Burlington Rotary Language Learning Lab are your sources for language learning materials!

Language Learning LabThanks to a grant from the Burlington Rotary Club, the library has been adding books, audiobooks, and DVDs to a new language learning collection. Library cardholders can choose to check out materials to study a variety of languages—from Latin to Russian to Chinese. There are kid-friendly materials, too.

For folks interested in more intensive instruction, we offer the Rotary Language Learning Lab, complete with three laptop computers and award-winning software: Rosetta Stone for learning English and Spanish, and TELL Me More for French, German, Italian and Japanese. These computers are available for in-library use whenever the meeting room / language lab is not scheduled for other programs. A library card is not necessary to use the Language Lab, but we will hold on to some photo ID while you use it.

The lab also includes a DVD/VCR player and CD player, so folks who do not have a library card to check out materials or who do not have this equipment at home can still learn a new language, at the library.

We're especially excited about two DVD sets: Inglés Sin Barreras (English Without Barriers) for learning English, and Destinos, a 52-week course for learning Spanish that features a fun serialized story that takes viewers around the globe.

Stop by the library and ask a staff member for help getting started in the Language Learning Lab, and thank a Rotarian for making it possible!
